Jimmy Alegria

Senior Legal Counsel

Jimmy Alegria is a South American lawyer with extensive experience in international trade law, international cooperation, administrative law, government contracting, and compliance. His career includes significant roles within various Peruvian government agencies, contributing to the country’s alignment with international trade and regulatory standards. His practice areas include:

  • International Trade Law: Jimmy has worked at the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru, where he was involved in ongoing trade negotiations before the World Trade Organization (WTO). He conducted legal reviews of regulatory projects proposed by various government entities, ensuring their compatibility with international trade commitments.
  • Public Policy and OECD Compliance: Jimmy has played a key role in reviewing and analyzing public policies related to international trade, determining their alignment with Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) legal instruments. This work was crucial in the context of Peru’s accession process to the OECD.
  • International Trade Compliance: With a deep understanding of global trade regulations, Jimmy ensures that businesses and government entities comply with international trade laws, safeguarding against violations and promoting smooth international transactions.
  • Government Contracting and Compliance: Jimmy has substantial experience in government contracting, ensuring that public procurement processes comply with legal and regulatory standards. He has advised on public labor law, public procurement, and arbitration proceedings, ensuring that government contracts are executed efficiently and lawfully.
  • International Cooperation and Administrative Law: Jimmy has worked on matters related to international cooperation at the Ministry of Culture of Peru. His expertise extends to providing legal advice to several municipalities in Peru, particularly in areas involving public sector operations and compliance.
  • Legal Research and Social Development: Prior to his government roles, Jimmy interned at the Benchmarking Public Procurement Project of the International Finance Corporation/World Bank and the Office of External Relations of the Inter-American Development Bank, contributing to legal research and social development initiatives.

 

Education:

  • American University Washington College of Law, Washington, D.C.: Master of Laws in International Legal Studies, with a focus on International Business Law and Free Trade Agreements & Regional Integration.
  • World Trade Institute, University of Bern, Switzerland: Master’s degree in International Law and Economics (MILE).
  • Andean University of Cusco, Peru: Bachelor of Law.
